What graveyards are included?
The following graveyards are covered by this survey:
- Aughadown Lower Graveyard: Surrounding the ruins of the old St Matthew's
church.
- Aughadown Upper Graveyard: Adjacent to the above graveyard. Site of a
medieval church.
- Creagh "1810" Graveyard: Surrounding the disused Creagh Church of Ireland
church.
- Creagh Old Graveyard: Adjacent to the above graveyard. Site of a ruined
medieval church.
- Drimoleague Old Graveyard: Site of a medieval church and a famine
memorial.
- Drinagh West Graveyard: Site of a medieval and later Church of Ireland
church.
- Kilcoe 19th Century R.C. Church: Site of a ruined post penal Roman
Catholic church.
- Kilcoe Old Graveyard: Close to Kilcoe castle. Site of a ruined medieval
church.
These were picked because they have not been surveyed to
date and would be of interest to people.
Will other graveyards be added later?
Yes, it is hoped to expand the survey over time but we cannot, as yet, answer queries relating to any other graveyards outside of the survey.
Who runs this project?
Margaret Murphy is the key driver of the project. William Casey also contributed to it,
both in research and software and IT support.
Thanks also to Skibbereen Heritage Centre and Cork County Council
for their support and to all of those who contributed to the study.
A special thanks to the Heritage Council for its support, which enabled this project to go ahead.
Are unmarked/un-inscribed grave recorded?
Unmarked and un-inscribed names have been recorded but they are not included in the online survey due to logistical reasons.
This data is still being collected and will be included in the printed version of this survey which will be completed by November 2010.
A copy of the printed survey will be given to each parish concerned, to Skibbereen Library and there will also be a copy at Skibbereen Heritage Centre
so there will be full public access to its results
I have further information about a graveyard or a grave covered by the survey, what do I do?
If you have any information on the graveyards covered by the survey, please contact Skibbereen Heritage Centre
on 028 40900 or Margaret Murphy on 087 930 5735 or email Skibbereen Heritage Centre
by clicking
here.
Please note, however, that we cannot answer queries relating to graveyards outside of the survey.
How do I search the records?
You can search the database by visiting the
Search Page. The following search form
appears:
To run a search you must enter either a First Name or Last Name and press the
"Search" button. Wildcard characters: * for multiple characters and ? for a
single character are allowed. The search boxes are not case sensitive.
The search can be refined by choosing an individual Graveyard and/or choosing a
Death Year
Below is the result for a search on the name "Mary McCarthy"
To view the gravestones associated with the individual click on
the "View" link.
This page displays a photo of the gravestone and displays the headstone's inscription.
Details of the individuals inscribed are also listed. The buttons at the bottom
of this page allow you to scroll back or forward through your results, return to the full results list or start a new search. There are two links at the top
of the page. The "Graveyard" link open a page showing a "Bing" map of the
location of the graveyard. The "View Plot" opens a page that displays an outline
of the graveyard and an indication of the location of the grave within the
graveyard. (Note: Old graveyards are not laid out in strict grid formats.
The plot indicator is a good, but
not exact, indication of the location of a grave.)
What does "Use Sounds Like" checkbox do?
Clicking this checkbox brings back extra results for your search. As well as the
entered Last Name the results will also include names that have the same
phonetic sound as the entered value. Also our "Sounds Like" has been especially
developed for Irish surnames. During the 19th and early 20th centuries the O' and Mc were often
dropped from start of Irish names. By clicking on the "Use Sounds Like" results
are returned for a name regardless whether the O' or Mc was used. For example a
search for the surname O'Driscoll with the "Use Sounds Like" will return results
for O'Driscoll and Driscoll plus names that are phonetically close to
O'Driscoll.
